Transporation to Moraine Lake in Banff

I have read that you cannot drive your car to Lake Moraine anymore. What are my other options to get there and what if I am interested in reaching there to capture the sunrise?

  • Outdoor Activities
  • National Parks
  • Canada

That's true you can't drive to Moraine Lake anymore. Personal vehicles have been banned on Moraine Lake Road since 2023, so the only ways in are a shuttle, a tour, or a licensed commercial operator.

Your options

  • Parks Canada shuttle (the budget pick): It leaves from the Lake Louise Park & Ride near the ski resort. In 2026 it ran every 30 minutes, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the last ride back was at 7:30 p.m. A round trip was about $12.75 for adults, plus a small booking fee.
  • Roam Transit: A day pass was around $30 and covers the Lake Connector too. It's handy if you are staying in Banff and want to see Lake Louise too.
  • Private shuttles and tours: These cost more, but they can be worth it for sunrise. Several companies run 4 or 5 a.m. departures for your sunrise photography.
  • Staying at Moraine Lake Lodge: Guests are allowed to drive in.
