    5 day(s)

    Preference(s):
    • Culture
    • Relaxing
    • Historic Sites
    • Shopping

    Destination Notes:

Day 1 (May 10): Arrive and settle into Alfama

    • Land at Lisbon Airport (LIS), take the Metro or a taxi to the apartment.
    • Easy first afternoon: walk up to Miradouro de Santa Luzia for the view over Alfama's rooftops.
    • Dinner in Alfama, then a fado house if anyone is still awake.

    Day 2 (May 11): Belém

    • Jerónimos Monastery in the morning.
    • Pastéis de Belém for custard tarts. The queue moves fast; eating inside is quicker than takeaway.
    • Walk along the river to the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Day 3 (May 12): Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto

    • Ride Tram 28 early before it gets packed, or walk the route instead.
    • Afternoon in Chiado: bookshops, cafés and the Carmo Convent ruins.
    • Sunset at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, then dinner and drinks in Bairro Alto.

Day 4 (May 13): Markets and LX Factory

    • Lunch at Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira).
    • LX Factory in the afternoon for shops and street art.

Day 5 (May 14): Sintra, as a day trip

    • Early train from Lisbon's Rossio station to Sintra, about 40 minutes. Aim to be on one of the first departures; the ticket line in Lisbon gets long in peak season, and arriving early beats both the Pena Palace crowds and the midday heat.
    • Pena Palace on our timed-entry tickets. The gardens are worth an extra hour if there's time.
    • Bus 434 or a taxi covers the steep walk between the station, the palace and the town centre.
    • Afternoon at Quinta da Regaleira and its Initiation Well.
    • Train back to Lisbon in the evening; check the return timetable before leaving so the last stop of the day isn't a rushed one.
  3. Porto

    Porto, Porto, Portugal

Day 6 (May 15): Travel to Porto

    • Direct train from Lisbon (Oriente or Santa Apolónia) to Porto Campanhã, roughly 3 hours.
    • Evening walk down to the Ribeira riverfront and across the Dom Luís I Bridge.

Day 7 (May 16): Old Porto

    • Livraria Lello (buy tickets online; there's an entry fee).
    • São Bento station's blue-and-white tile panels, then Porto Cathedral.
    • Port wine tasting at one of the lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Day 8 (May 17): Douro Valley day trip

    • Full-day tour with vineyard visits and a river boat ride.
    • Last group dinner back in Porto.
